What to Consider When Shopping for an Engagement Ring

An engagement ring is not a symbol of love but also an investment. With over 35 years of experience in the jewelry industry, the International Diamond Center is the perfect location to learn about the process of choosing the perfect diamond and setting. We spoke with Ryan, the manager at the IDC Millena Mall location, about tips on shopping for an engagement ring!

What if you aren’t sure what style of ring you like?

Most women have searched Pinterest and scoured bridal magazines for engagement rings, but few really know the exact engagement ring that they would like to have. Since each diamond is unique, it is so important to actually see them in person. This gives you the opportunity to try different styles and cuts to help narrow down to the ones you like. Many jewelers will have a variety of rings in stock but will also give you the option of customization to create your dream engagement ring.

What should I know about diamonds before I select my rings?

The quality of diamonds can be classified by the Four C’s. It is important to understand these and how they will affect the cost of your engagement ring.

Color

Although color diamonds have become very popular over the years, it is still the colorless diamond that is the most desired for engagement rings. The less color a diamond has, the more valuable it is. Diamonds are given a grade based on their color, Grade D being colorless to Z being light yellow. The color of a diamond is created by the chemicals in the Earth that it has been exposed to through its development.

Clarity

Clarity is determined by the number of blemishes or flaws found in a diamond, with flawless being the most expensive. The more flaws in a diamond the lower the value. Clarity is determined by a grading system.

Carat

The weight of a diamond is referred to in carats. This doesn’t necessarily refer to the actual size of the diamond, however.

Cut

The cut of a diamond is the only one of the 4 C’s that is determined by man. There are a variety of different cuts for a diamond and its value is determined by the quality of these cuts.

Should I purchase insurance for my engagement ring?

Insurance is very important to make sure that you protect your investment. Although some jewelers, like IDC, will offer guarantees on the quality and craftsmanship of your engagement ring, you will have to purchase insurance to cover your new accessory in case it is lost or stolen. It’s a small price to pay for a little peace of mind.
